Stepping Out of the Present
Fitzgerald claims we are beat back endlessly against the current,
Tossed further into the past with each coming day.
I disagree.
I think we rather struggle in the same spot,
Chained within the present;
Trapped by our own expectations.
Only when we let go and accept our lives will the wind soften,
The fog clear,
And the first step forward be taken.

This was inspired by a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerlad in his book The Great Gatsby. The quote reads, "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
