Lotus Terrace, a Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant that is located in a small strip mall next to Ogden 6 theaters. Though the location may be good for publicity, its food does not encourage people to come back.

The restaurant was homey and inviting. Like most Chinese restaurants, it smelled lightly of fish, but was not overpowering. There was no one in the restaurant, and I was seated right away, with a host that had good manners and a smile on her face. She gave me water and hot tea and gave me time to look at the menu.

The menu was full of lots of the classic Americanized Chinese foods. Such as orange chicken, and sweet and sour pork. I tried to look for something different but appealing. I went with the walnut shrimp. I had had it once in New York City, and wanted to recreate the memory of a delicious dish.

I waited longer then I should have for no one being in the restaurant to order my food. As soon as she came from the kitchen I waved and she came scurrying over with apologetic eyes. She took my order, topped off my water and went back into the kitchen and I waited for my food.

Lotus Terrace was owned by a chinese couple a few years back. The couple lived right down the street from Lotus Terrace, though it was not called that at the time. A few years ago it was called Tongs, and specialized in just Chinese food. After the few years went by the restaurant was running low on business and joined with a Vietnamese couple. Then came Lotus Terrace. The Chinese food stayed on the menu and the Vietnamese was added too.

I had gotten my food in about 7 minutes and was delighted to see that it looked a lot like the one from New York City. I put the rice down on my plate and scooped some shrimp right on top. I took a bite and was actually surprised that it was not as good as I hoped.

The shrimp was lathered in its white gooey sauce and surrounded by broccoli. It had the taste of mayo, sugar and vanilla. The broccoli was steamed but crunchy. The size of the shrimp were massive and definitely filling if only having 4 or 5.

If you are looking for a place with authentic Chinese food that is less Americanized, I advise researching other restaurants. If Americanized Chinese food is your taste, Lotus Terrace is the perfect place for you. Don’t be afraid to try out their Vietnamese dishes as well. Broadening our taste and opening our minds helps us live a little more everyday.
